advancement. Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and
strategic Tax Manager. This critical management role is responsible
for overseeing all aspects of tax compliance, reporting, planning,
and strategy for the organization or its clients. The ideal
candidate will possess deep technical expertise in tax law,
exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to drive efficient
processes and ensure strict adherence to all regulatory
requirements. In a small CPA firm environment, this role will also
require hands-on involvement in client engagements, close
collaboration with firm leadership, and a strong commitment to
delivering personalized, high-quality client service. Key
Responsibilities: Team Leadership and Management: Supervise,
mentor, and lead the tax department team (including senior and
staff accountants). Manage performance, delegate tasks effectively,
and foster a collaborative and high-performing environment. Provide
ongoing training and technical guidance, conduct performance
evaluations, assist with staff development and retention, and
promote accountability and continuous improvement within the team.
Tax Compliance & Reporting Oversight: Manage the accurate and
timely preparation and review of all federal, state, local, and
potentially international tax returns for various entity types
(C-Corp, S-Corp, Partnership, Individual, etc.). Ensure full
compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations, monitor filing
deadlines, review workpapers for accuracy and completeness, and
maintain strong quality control standards across all engagements.
Tax Planning & Strategy: Develop and implement effective tax
planning strategies to optimize the tax position and minimize
liabilities while remaining fully compliant with all tax laws.
Advise business owners and high-net-worth individuals on entity
structuring, transactional planning, estimated tax projections, and
long-term strategic initiatives that align with their financial
goals. Technical Expertise & Research: Serve as the subject matter
expert on complex tax matters. Conduct and supervise technical tax
research and clearly document findings and conclusions for
management or client review. Stay current with changes in federal
and state tax legislation, interpret new guidance, and communicate
implications to clients and internal team members. Auditing and
Controversy: Manage all aspects of federal and state tax audits,
acting as the primary liaison between the firm/company, clients,
and tax authorities (IRS, state DORs). Respond to notices and
inquiries, prepare supporting documentation, negotiate resolutions
when appropriate, and guide clients through the audit and appeals
process. Accounting for Income Taxes (ASC 740): Oversee the
quarterly and annual tax provision calculations and ensure accurate
financial statement reporting and disclosures related to income
taxes. Review deferred tax calculations, evaluate uncertain tax
positions, and coordinate with external auditors as needed to
support financial reporting requirements. Process Improvement &
Technology: Identify and implement process improvements and
leverage tax technology software to enhance efficiency, accuracy,
and data management within the tax function. Streamline workflows,
improve documentation standards, enhance utilization of tax
software and data analytics tools, and support the adoption of best
practices to increase overall operational effectiveness.
Qualifications & Skills: Education: A Bachelor’s degree in
Accounting or Finance is required. A CPA certification is required.
A Master’s in Taxation (Mtax) is a significant advantage.
Commitment to ongoing professional education and maintaining active
licensure is expected. Experience: A minimum of 5–7 years of
progressive tax accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a
supervisory or management capacity, ideally within a public
accounting firm or a large corporate tax department. Experience
managing multiple client engagements simultaneously and working
directly with business owners or executive leadership is strongly
preferred. Technical Skills: Deep expertise in tax law and
reporting requirements. Strong proficiency with tax preparation
software (e.g., CCH, Thomson Reuters, GoSystem) and MS Office Suite
(especially Excel). Experience with tax research platforms,
workflow management systems, and financial statement review is
